March- A Busy Month at Stonehedge

Enrichment Day

The PTA's annual Enrichment Day was a great success! Nearly 300 students participated in the day, taking up to two different sessions at no charge. Classes ranged from cake decorating to yoga, cartooning to sand art, science fun to Legos. Special thanks to Home Depot for donating supplies for their "Wood Hobby" class. Dozens of wonderful volunteers stepped up to make this day happen. Thanks to our course teachers, parent volunteers, custodians, and the WGMS volunteers.

Spare Change for SPCA

Spare Change for SPCA was part of our Stonehedge Stands Up/OLWEUS bully prevention program. A group of 5th grade girls, Lets Unite, wanted to make a difference for their community. They "united" Stonehedge with the Pennies for Paws drive and collected $1011.00. We will surprise the SPCA with our donations at the K-2 Character Ed Assembly on 4/2 and again on 4/30 for the 3-5 SPCA visit!! It goes to show how a small idea can turn into a BIG way to help others...A great lesson for all of us!! Our WILDCAT paws thank the entire Stonehedge community!!!

Library Nights

The Open Library Nights were a huge success! Students and families came and enjoyed browsing through the books and enjoying the warm beach atmosphere!

Irish Step Dancers

On Saint Patrick’s Day all students were led to the gymnasium by the sound of Mr. Cunningham’s bagpipes. Once in the gym, the Harrington School of Irish Dance put on quite a show for students and staff. Several students even had the opportunity to learn the Irish Step Dance!

Mr. Schoults has his head shaved for St. Baldrick’s

A student in Mrs. Prosser’s class won the privilege to shave Mr. Shoults’ head to wrap-up the St. Baldrick’s donation drive. He opted to share the task with some of his classmates. Mr. Shoults was impressed by the school spirit the event created and that in just 4 days the students raised over $1200. Two girls in Mrs. Quick’s class also shaved their heads at different St. Bladrick’s events.
Beauties and the Beast

Buddy Day

Blue and Gold unite! On March 20, the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades “buddied” up with the 2nd, 1st, and kindergarten classes for a day of collaboration and fun! Each group worked together to write letters to soldiers, the children’s hospital and a nursing home. They also spent time building communication and friendships by talking about their vacation plans and books they have recently read.

"Sing"

The Third Grade Classes presented this year's Chorus concert, "Sing!" on Tuesday, March 24th at 7:00 pm in the Stonehedge Gym. The performance featured songs that remind us that we sing for work, for play, and sometimes just to feel good. Students sang in different styles and musical forms including acapella rounds or canons. Students also displayed their talents on xylophones and percussion to accompany two of their songs. The finale of the concert, "Rockin' Robin" had everyone tapping their toes and bopin' along.

March News

Student Council

At Wednesday’s Student Council meeting, representatives shared the student perspective on switching classes for Math, ELA and Content-Area in fifth grade. One student suggested (tongue in cheek) that we should structure the school day more like a day at Disney World. After that, the students weighed in on how their school day flows and identified what they liked and disliked about their day. All of the students could point to ways that the current structure helps them to learn. They also provided insights such as, when they switch classes more often, they are able to make more friends; on the other hand, switching less allows them to get to know their classmates and homeroom teacher better. I was pleasantly impressed by how focused on learning the students’ conversation was and how well they expressed their thoughts.

Pennies4Paws

One of Stonehedge's fifth grade clubs, called Let's Unite, part of our “Stonehedge Stands Up” community, is sponsoring a drive for our local animal shelter.  We hope you will join us in helping our students see what a difference we can make when we work together and help care for others. Students are asked to bring in spare change now through March 13 and donate to the SPCA. Collection jars are in classrooms.
