Opening Week

We had a wonderful opening week at Stonehedge Elementary. Our students came to school each day ready to learn with smiling faces and good manners.

Our teachers and faculty put a lot of time and work into preparing for the week and the school year. Our custodial staff did a terrific job getting the building in excellent shape, and the transportation department efficiently coordinated bus runs so all of our students arrived safely and on time. I want to thank everyone at school and all of our parents for making the first days of school so successful. We are off to a great start to make 2012-2013 one of the best school years ever for our students.

We welcomed many new students and their families to our school this year. We also have several new staff members and some faculty in new positions. Karen McMahon and Allen Lauricella have started the year with us in third grade. Sue Erhard and Lisa McCarthy both substituted at Stonehedge last year and are back with us teaching in fifth grade. Cindy Smith, who taught at East Hill last year, has also joined our fifth grade teaching team.

Kelli Barbuto and Karey Drake are now part of our team of instructional specialists. We have two special education teachers who are new to Stonehedge, Jessica Harrison and Michele Storms.  Marcia DeMartini will be teaching music classes and Derek Campbell will be teaching physical education. We have two new school nurses, Shawna Inman-Praxl and Stephanie Skardinski. Kathleen Elmer is our new ADAPEP counselor and we will have Eileen Conboy and Pam Tracy working together in the Gold Office. We have three new teaching assistants, Melissa Commesso, Sandy DeCarr and Melissa Mangovski and a new cafeteria aide, Mary LaFave. We are very happy to have them all at Stonehedge Elementary.

I enjoyed meeting many parents last week, and I look forward to meeting more at our Open House on Wednesday, September 12.  A schedule of classroom presentation times was sent home with students on Friday.

At our Open House parents and guardians will have the opportunity to hear from the teachers about curriculum, classroom expectations, and opportunities to partner with the school. We will also be showing an informational DVD about OLWEUS (pronounced all-vay-us) in the school library. Olweus is the research-based anti-bullying program that our district has adopted. I welcome feedback about the open house and our programs.

Please remember that our PTA Welcome Back Meeting is schedule for Tuesday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. and school pictures will be taken Wednesday – Friday, October 10-12.
